Great Sustainable Home Open Garden Tour in conjunction with Open Gardens Australia
Join Chris Ferreira and Open Gardens Australia on an open home and garden tour at his Sustainable Home in Hamilton Hill.
Chris explains how he "Beat the Drought'. Since retrofitting his 1950’s home and garden, Chris is opening his home garden to show how his garden has survived and thrived its third Perth summer.
Tours throughout the day covering food production, Waterwise and native species, soil improvement, best practice fertiliser use, how to use plants for natural heating and cooling, and much more!
Palmyra Primary's Kitchen Garden Program will be serving up delicious falafel and spicy harissa from 11.30am using ingredients grown in the kitchen garden. This ticks all the boxes - nutritional food, local ingredients, great taste and a fundraiser too!
And of course, morning and afternoon teas available for purchase throughout the day from Native ARC.
An $8 entry fee will be charged by Open Gardens Australia. No charge for children under 18 years.

Great Gourmet Gardens Food Theatre with Don Hancey and the Great Gardens Team
Thursday 27th March 2014 at Perth Zoo.
This event celebrates the hedonism of food, with a twist! A first-class gourmet meal is just part of a series of events that will show guests that food is only as good as the way it is grown, and demonstrate the role of healthy food and diet in creating healthy people.
Celebrity chef Don Hancey will team up with the Great Gardens Food Theatre team and MC James Lush to inspire and empower guests towards creating their own healthy, holistic and wholesome food cycles at home, starting with how nutritious food is grown, prepared, eaten and ultimately returned by recycling the food waste into a growing medium for more healthy food.
Chris Ferreira is a well-known personality in the gardening and sustainability world. He has a solid background in environmental science and has emerged as a leading authority on sustainable gardening, land care, sustainable development and energy efficient home design. His media work includes regular roles on 720 ABC Radio and Channel 7’s Greenfingers gardening and sustainability program. Chris leads The Forever Project team which aims to inspire and empower the community to live more sustainably. This currently includes a range of high profile and award winning projects such as Great Gardens, Heavenly Hectares and Enviro Theatre in conjunction with the Swan River Trust, the Water Corporation and others.
Steve Wood is a Horticulturist and Nursery owner with over 35 years’ experience. He is familiar as an ABC Radio Garden Talk Back host, a presenter with Channel 7’s Green Fingers Gardening program. He has experience as a presenter with Great Garden’s workshops. He is also a passionate organic gardener.
James is currently the patron of The Forever Project and will be MCing this event. Back in the UK James presented a daily show for the BBC for years and grew a media business that focused on production and consultancy. Now in Australia, it's more of the same. For the past three years James has presented almost every show on 720 ABC at least once and is host of the highly popular ABC radio Saturday Breakfast Show.
Sabrina started her gardening career completing a certificate of horticulture at Bentley TAFE, then a Degree in Applied Science Horticulture at WAIT, and finally completed a Bachelor of Social Science (Leisure Sciences) at Edith Cowan University. She has managed a nursery in Kalgoorlie and now runs a landscaping business. Sabrina is doing her best to teach us all the joys of gardening - and whether telling us how to "grow it and cook it" or giving advice on fruit trees or tips on gardening design you won't want to miss this lively session!
Passion is the best word to use when describing Don Hancey. After having a long and successful career in some of WA’s finest regional kitchens, Don Hancey has become WA’s Food ambassador through his continual support and dedication to WA food producers. Don loves nothing more than working with quality local producers to help grow their business, their opportunities and create innovative ways to present, showcase and market their produce by creating a world class dish. Don has a holistic view on food production and is interested in the process from soil right through to plate.

Nick Bell is one of Australia's most respected turf experts, with over 40 years' experience in the turf industry. Nick is a regular guest on radio and television and has been providing advice on the effective and sustainable management of turf to domestic and commercial customers. Nick provides consultancy to the Great Gardens team on the content of workshops and occasionally joins the presenter team to provide workshop participants with his specialist knowledge.
Sean Gray is an experienced horticulturalist with a strong background in native, Riverwise gardening and design. His passion for bio-dynamic and sustainable gardening practices is evident with over 15 years’ experience in landscaping and the retail nursery industry. Sean is regularly requested to provide talks to community groups and he is a regular guest on ABC local radio and has gained a strong media following over time

The Great Gardens Team will be appearing at Whiteman Park Envirofest 2014.
This family environmental festival will showcase a range of environmental concepts, issues and products looking at conservation in action.

Food Theatre at Eat Drink Perth
Join the Great Gardens team and our celebrity chef for a tantalising free Food Theatre as part of City of Perth's month long Eat Drink Perth festivities.
This outdoor food theatre event will include demonstrations of how to prepare simple, healthy and delicious meals. Sample small food tasters and learn how wholesome and holistic food is grown, prepared and eaten in this fun and interactive presentation.
